What Will Bring You Happiness?
Greed is classified as an immense desire for wealth, goods or objects with the intention to keep it all to yourself. It is not just the desire for things at the level of comfort or survival, but far beyond that to a level of extreme extravagance. This is considered a deadly sin in the Christian religion because The Ten Commandments, and many bible passages are about selfless acts, and not acquiring vast amounts of wealth for yourself when others are in such a high need just to survive. In Disney films, the majority of greed is aimed at either power or money, however the female villains in Disney films desire more tangible objects. Disney characters such as Prince John from Robin Hood and Governor Ratcliffe from the film Pocahontas desire pure wealth in the form of gold and money. Their desire for extreme amounts of money leads them to exploit others in order to obtain wealth.
Prince John taxes the people, wealthy or poor, to the state of starvation while Governor Ratcliffe forces men to dig for hours and kill anyone who gets in his way. Both of these examples are exactly how the Bible tells Christians not to act. Female Disney villains also act in similar fashions in order to achieve what they desire, although they tend to desire tangible objects. Madame Medusa from the Disney film The Rescuers exhibits the sin of greed when she desires a huge diamond, creating danger and violence to all those who pose a threat. The villain in 101 Dalmatians also craves something other than power or money. Although Cruella Deville loves money, her true sin of greed is present when she kidnaps and attempts to slaughter many dalmatian puppies in order to create a fur coat. Many people love animals, especially dogs, however in this Disney film the animals are given voices and personas, which makes her greed even more appalling to Disney audiences.
